A collection of design patterns and principles for mitigating the spread of online hate and harassment on social platforms.
As part of my internship at the ADL's Center for Technology & Society, I researched design patterns and principles for social platforms that help to mitigate the spread of online hate.
Social media platforms are driven to develop apps that maximize user engagement, often without regard for the nature of the content.
We developed a library of design patterns and principles aimed at reducing online hate and harassment. This library is showcased on a dedicated website featuring demos and detailed information.
Our goal with this project has been to provide a library of responsible design pattern and principles for social app product teams so that they can design digital social experiences that are more conducive to civil discourse.
The patterns and principles in this library are collected from brainstorming sessions, recommendations from experts, and existing design patterns that are effective at mitigating hate on social platforms.
